Bodybuilding Supplements May Be Damaging Your Liver

Your Daily Protein Shake Could Be Hurting You

reported jaundice, with some of the participants dealing with other issues such as abdominal pain and nausea. Research even showed 41 percent of participants having “hepatocellular pattern of liver injury,” while 59 percent had “mild hepatitis and profound cholestasis,” (a condition where the release of bile is blocked from the liver.)

However, it seems the real problem isn’t with the supplements themselves — it’s their ingredients that you may not know about. Many of the supplements, according to the study, were found to include anabolic steroids that aren’t listed in the ingredients.

While intended to boost athletic performance and improve physique, these steroids actually have the potential to cause serious liver damage, cardiovascular injury, and infertility. Not to mention, they can make a guy’s jewels shrink up, and cause premature balding — two things that’ll knock even the most jacked up man down a peg or two.

An example would be stanozolol, currently classified as a controlled substance and prohibited by the World Anti-Doping Agency. However, it doesn’t stop manufacturers from secretly adding these extra ingredients into their supplements. As the use of illegal anabolic steroids in supplements grows higher, there has been an increase in oversight of the Food and Drug Administration and Drug Enforcement Administration.

If you’re a regular supplement-taker, you should consult your doctor and only take anabolic steroids under the strict supervision of a physician,” says lead study author Dr. Andrew Stolz, M.D. In a statement in Science Daily, Stolz said that “patients need to inform their care providers if they are taking any form of nutritional supplement and should be especially leery of bodybuilding supplements, which may contain illicit or USA Drug Enforcement Administration controlled anabolic steroids.”

Worst case, you can always build muscle mass the old-fashioned way through protein consumption and calorie increase. Your liver will thank you.
